This year we are seeing some exciting and big changes from the Youth and Children's Departments. The Territorial Youth & Children's Ministries Conference (TYCMC) is going through a major revamp and is now called THRIVE. We are always looking for ways in which we can grow and encourage our ministries in the Salvation Army to not only see improvement but to THRIVE. We want to see our leaders, communities, ministries and relationships with God and each other THRIVE.

We value each of your efforts, contributions and leadership that you demonstrate every week to help bring young people into a relationship with Jesus. THRIVE is aimed at encouraging and supporting you to do this. THRIVE will be a time of spiritual refreshment, encouragement, networking and practical learning. Most importantly THRIVE will be about supporting YOU to THRIVE in your ministry setting. This weekend is for anyone involved in youth or children’s ministry in the Salvation Army; full-time, part-time or voluntary.

When: 21st - 23rd July 2017 (THRIVE starts at 3:00pm - 21st | ends 1:30pm - 23rd) Please see info about flight/transport times below.

Location: Silverstream Retreat, Lower Hutt (3 Reynolds Bach Drive, Stokes Valley, Lower Hutt)

Delegate age: Please note that the minimum age for THRIVE delegates is 17 years of age. There is no maximum age.

Dustan-BellDustan Bell began leading a local church at age 21 while also serving as a Bible College Principal. Recently, he has served as Youth Pastor at Calvary Christian Church and as Youth Alive Regional Director on the Sunshine Coast. Common consensus is that Dustan married up, and together with his wife Sarah he is now the Campus Pastor at Calvary Christian Church Townsville under the leadership of Pastor James & Sam Macpherson.


Cost: $150 per person. Discount for three or more delegates from the same corps/centre. The scale will work as follows:
1-2 delegate cost is $150 per person 
3-4 delegate cost is $135 per person 
5+ delegate cost is $120 per person

Start time: THRIVE will start at 3.00pm on Friday 21st July. Anyone flying in will need to LAND IN WELLINGTON NO LATER THAN 12:30PM. A Bus transfer will be provided from the airport to conference venue. The transport will leave the airport no later than 1:00pm. If you arrive later than this time, you will need to organise your own transport.

End time: THRIVE concludes at 1.30pm on Sunday 23rd July. For those flying out of Wellington, and needing transport to the airport, your flights should leave NO EARLIER than 3.30pm.

Travel Subsidies: Travel subsidy (reimbursement) for transport option -

  • $100 or 50% incl gst (whichever is lowest) for those flying from Akl or Wgtn for flights booked on or before Wednesday 31 May
  • $150 or 50% incl gst (whichever is lowest) for those flying from elsewhere for flights booked on or before Wednesday 31 May
  • $50 or 50% incl gst (whichever is lowest) for flights booked on or after Wednesday 31 May
  • E-tickets/receipt copies to be submitted along with reimbursement form
  • Those travelling by any other means (rail, road, ferry) need to contact Territorial Youth Dept. to discuss reimbursement
  • Any costs associated with changes to transport arrangements, including cancellations, will be the delegate’s responsibility

Thank you for taking time out of your busy schedules to attend this important weekend.

I am excited about the theme for this weekend: THRIVE. The word Thrive means to grow, develop, prosper, flourish, boom, expand, and luxuriate. There is no such thing as long-term shortcuts. Good things take time. Great things take longer. This weekend will remind us of the need to sink our roots deeply into Christ, so that we can indeed thrive.

Goal 2 of our National Youth ministry strategy is to recruit, develop and retain youth leaders. Thrive Conference is a time of learning and development, inspiration and spiritual refreshment. Make the most of it! Soak it all in! Use the opportunity to network and encourage each other, whether you are an old hat or a brand newbie in children’s and/or youth ministry. We are all here to give and receive.

I want to remind you that your ministry shapes futures; your ministry blesses others; your ministry changes lives; your ministry creates fruit; your ministry impacts eternity; your ministry brings life!
Here is my prayer for you for this weekend and beyond: “Dear friend, I pray that you may enjoy good health and that all may go well with you, even as your soul is getting along well.” (3 John 1:2)

We so appreciate you making time in your schedules and minds to be fully present here at Thrive. We are so excited for this weekend - a weekend of new learning, making connections and sharing thoughts and ideas that will inspire and empower us in our ministries back home.

We hope that the conference and community experience will be a home away from home for you. That you would experience beauty, warmth, relevant conversation, and time for ‘play.’

We pray that this environment and community of people would be a space where you belong, where you feel your voice is heard, where your opinion matters. And that a feeling of belonging and safety places you in the best possible position to learn new skills and ideas for ministry and, more importantly, to hear from the One who longs to speak with you this weekend.

We pray that a passion would be ignited in you to then go home and create these environments and communities for the precious young people in the ministry God has called you to.
